New Zealand Scholarship
Academic extension at the highest level
New Zealand Scholarship is one of the most prestigious academic awards available to secondary school students in Aotearoa. Administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), New Zealand Scholarship recognises students who perform at a significantly high level in their subjects.
Scholarship examinations are undertaken alongside NCEA assessments and challenge students to demonstrate depth of understanding, advanced critical thinking and the ability to apply knowledge in complex contexts.
Achieving New Zealand Scholarship is a mark of academic distinction and is highly regarded by universities in New Zealand and internationally.
Understanding New Zealand Scholarship
New Zealand Scholarship is a standalone award. It does not contribute credits toward NCEA, but it is recorded on a student’s New Zealand Record of Achievement as formal recognition of exceptional academic performance.
Assessments may involve examinations, portfolios or reports, depending on the subject. Only a small proportion of candidates nationally achieve Scholarship each year, reflecting the high standard required.
New Zealand Scholarship at Marsden
New Zealand Scholarship is an integral part of Marsden’s culture of academic excellence.
Students with the capability and motivation to pursue New Zealand Scholarship are supported through subject-based extension, mentoring and targeted preparation. Many Year 13 students, and some Year 12 students working above level, choose to undertake New Zealand Scholarship.
Our consistent success in New Zealand Scholarship reflects the depth of teaching, intellectual curiosity and high expectations that define the Senior School experience.
Recognition and Monetary Awards
Students who achieve New Zealand Scholarship may be eligible for monetary awards to support tertiary study in New Zealand, and students who receive multiple scholarships may also be recognised through NZQA’s Top Scholar Award ceremony.
At Marsden, New Zealand Scholarship success is formally recognised and celebrated as a significant academic achievement.
Preparation for New Zealand Scholarship Exams
Preparation for New Zealand Scholarship may take place within regular classes, through targeted tutorials or extension sessions, and through additional resources provided by teachers.
Successful scholarship candidates demonstrate initiative, intellectual curiosity and the ability to pursue independent research. Preparation extends beyond the classroom and encourages students to read widely, think critically and engage deeply with their subjects.
Scholarship study is challenging, but it is also highly rewarding for students who are motivated to extend themselves academically.
