A group of Marsden students recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Shanghai, China, where they participated in the prestigious Concordia International School Shanghai Model United Nations (CISSMUN) conference. The experience combined cultural exploration, international diplomacy, and personal growth in equal measure.
The six-day trip began with three days exploring Shanghai’s top attractions, including a magical day at Disneyland Shanghai, a walk through the historic Yuyuan Gardens, and a breathtaking night river cruise on the Huangpu River. The group also enjoyed plenty of local cuisine and indulged in some retail therapy at local malls and a traditional street market.

The conference, held from 14–16 February, brought together students from around the world, including delegates from Gabon, Papua New Guinea, Japan, the UAE, and Iran. Marsden students debated urgent global issues such as the militarisation of the Arctic, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, AI in schools, and economic instability. They worked in committees to propose, amend, and pass resolutions—learning how to collaborate, negotiate, and navigate the complexities of international relations.
While the coveted Best Delegate awards were snapped up by students with significant prior experience, Marsden students made their mark. They developed confidence in public speaking, passed impactful amendments, and quickly learned to assert their voices—particularly in the face of debate groups where some students dominated conversations.
One of the highlights was hearing from keynote speaker Jordan Hattar, founder of Help4Refugees, who shared powerful insights about global humanitarian work and the importance of perseverance. Students were moved by the story of Shahd, a former refugee who lost her family in the 2023 Turkey earthquake, and who spoke to delegates via Zoom. Jordan praised Marsden students for their thoughtful engagement and public speaking.
Other memorable moments included a Valentine’s-themed touch to the conference (including singing telegrams and love heart-themed stickers), chilly but clear winter weather, and even a surprise birthday celebration for Akshara—complete with a cake from Business Class and a message on the plane's screen in both English and Mandarin!
Students returned with deeper understanding of global affairs, greater confidence in themselves, and a genuine excitement for future MUN opportunities. Huge thanks to Sarah Molisa and Julia Finny for accompanying the group on this life-changing journey.
