Over the holidays, a group of nine Marsden students in Years 10 and 12, accompanied by Deputy Principal Jenny Caldwell and Head of Health and Physical Education Juliet McGrath, had the privilege of immersing themselves in Japanese culture, customs, and traditions during their exchange at Toin Gakuen on the outskirts of Yokohama.
During the trip, our students stayed with homestay families, allowing them to fully experience daily life in Japan. They participated in various cultural activities, stepping up as leaders by teaching English to Japanese students through interactive games and activities. The students also took part in lessons that included music, PE and English, while exploring traditional Japanese arts such as koto (harp), taiko (drumming), kendo, karate, judo, the tea ceremony, and calligraphy. Additionally, they enjoyed a pottery experience and attended a fascinating lecture on Japanese history, deepening their understanding of the country’s cultural heritage.
The generosity of their homestay hosts was overwhelming, as the students were warmly welcomed and treated to a variety of delicious Japanese cuisine. They even picked up some of the language along the way. Our school waiata was proudly performed at an assembly and during the host appreciation party, further strengthening the bonds with their host families.
In addition to navigating Japan’s trains and buses, the group visited temples, shrines, the Commonwealth War Cemetery, Yokohama Landmark Tower and Museum, and enjoyed a magical day at Disneyland. Many hosts also took the students on trips to Tokyo, where they experienced the vibrant city and indulged in some great shopping—especially anime merchandise, which was a big hit with the group!
Although the schedule was full-on and the days were long, the experience was truly incredible. Our students left Japan with unforgettable memories, strong friendships, and a deep appreciation for Japan’s rich and diverse culture. The kindness and respect shown by the Japanese people made a lasting impact on everyone involved.
