Marsden is thrilled to announce its 2025 school production, Freaky Friday, a brand-new one-act musical that brings the classic tale to life with a contemporary twist. This family-friendly show features a diverse ensemble cast led by two extraordinary female leads, promising plenty of laughs, heartfelt moments and unforgettable songs.

The story follows Katherine, an organised mother, and her teenage daughter, Ellie, who couldn’t be more different. When they mysteriously swap bodies, they have just one day to solve the puzzle and return to normal. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, they come to appreciate each other in ways they never imagined, discovering the power of love and the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter.

This will be the first time Freaky Friday is performed in Wellington, making it an exciting debut for the local theatre scene. The production is directed and choreographed by the talented Alex McKellar, a theatre professional with over 20 years' experience. Alex has directed more than 50 shows, including major hits like WICKED, Heathers, The Addams Family and Les Miserables. She brings a wealth of industry knowledge and creative energy to Marsden’s stage.

Alex was recommended to Marsden by Deputy Principal Jenny Caldwell, who has previously worked with her in the local theatre community. By day, Alex works with Taki Rua Productions, touring shows across the country that spotlight Māori stories and voices.

Auditions for Freaky Friday were held last week, and the cast features 35 talented students from Years 9–13. The enthusiasm and energy during auditions were a clear indication of the amazing performance to come.

Mark your calendars for May 2025 and get ready for a show that will entertain and inspire the entire family. We can’t wait to see you there!
