Over the school holidays, a group of 10 Year 12 and 13 students from Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, accompanied by Chaplain Sarah King and Head of Art Kathryn Cotter, travelled to the small village of Safotu in Samoa for a memorable fellowship trip.
This journey marked the first time in five years that Marsden was able to undertake this enriching experience, following a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The trip offered a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in authentic Samoan culture and share in the hospitality of their host community.
Each morning, the students engaged in group activities that fostered teamwork and cultural exchange. In the afternoons, they spent quality time with their host families, learning about traditional Samoan customs and daily life. Evenings were a time to gather for dinner and share stories before retiring to their accommodation in traditional fales on the beach. These fales, complete with a single cold-water shower for all to share, provided a true taste of Samoan living.

Marsden students came well-prepared, packing their bags with as many donations as possible. They brought along sports equipment, stationery, craft supplies, and musical instruments such as ukuleles and harmonicas, leaving these items with the village as tokens of their appreciation and support.
Some amazing friendships were formed during the trip, and the bonds created will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Both the students and the villagers were thrilled to reconnect after the long hiatus. The village was especially excited, having been unsure if Marsden would be able to return, and they welcomed the group back with open arms.

Adding a special significance to the trip is the fact that the current Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, is a Marsden old girl. This connection made the experience even more meaningful for everyone involved.
We can't wait to turn this trip back into the annual fellowship tradition that we are all used to. Marsden is proud of the students' willingness to embrace new experiences and their generosity in supporting the Safotu community.
