Juliet McGrath, the Head of Health and Physical Education at Marsden, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for inspiring students to step outside their comfort zones. Juliet oversees Health and Physical Education lessons, teaches NCEA Physical Education at Levels 1, 2, and 3 and provides scholarship support for senior students. Additionally, she coordinates the Hauora Health and PE programme at Year 11, as well as Life Skills Health for Years 12 and 13.

Juliet’s role goes beyond the classroom, as she is also responsible for organising the school’s major House events, including Athletics Day, Swimming Sports, Cross Country, and House Sport. These events are highlights of the school year, encouraging participation, team spirit, and a love for physical activity across the whole school.

Before joining Marsden in 2023, Juliet taught Physical Education and Health at Nonsuch High School for Girls in Cheam, UK, a girls' grammar school. Upon moving to New Zealand, she spent time at Rangitoto College in Auckland, followed by 10 years at Otumoetai College in Tauranga, where she was teacher in charge of Sports Science and Scholarship, Health and Physical Education. Her experience in both the UK and New Zealand education systems has given her a broad perspective on physical education and the development of young people.

I love to make learning fun. If students are having fun, they soon find themselves trying new things, stepping out of their comfort zone, developing confidence and enjoying new experiences.

Academically, Juliet holds a Bachelor of Science (Joint Honours) in Physical Education, Sports Science, and Social Sciences from Loughborough University, UK, and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Physical Education and English from the same institution.

Outside of school, Juliet enjoys keeping active through running, tramping, and spending time with her family. She is a dedicated supporter of her two teenagers, who are keen football and volleyball players, and she loves to spend weekends watching their games. For Juliet, home is made special by her family, the tradition of a Sunday roast, and her two beloved cats.
