Y13 Dean, Science and Chemistry Teacher
Charlotte McCarthy has dedicated 18 years to Marsden, where she is a Science and Chemistry teacher and serves as the Year 13 Dean. A graduate of Canterbury University with a degree in Chemistry, Charlotte has a rich teaching background that spans multiple schools, including several high schools in Japan where she taught English in Years 11-13 through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. Taking a break to raise her two sons, Charlotte stayed connected to Marsden through tutoring and eventually returned full-time.
One of the highlights of Charlotte's career to date has been being Year 13 Dean in 2024, one she found especially rewarding as she’s had the privilege of guiding this same cohort since last year. At school, she treasures the Year 10 tramps in Tongariro National Park, having joined every year for eight years running, which she describes as the highlight of her school year.
She deeply values Marsden students’ eagerness to learn and their fun spirit, sharing her wisdom with students who are each, as she says, “somebody’s child - they are all to be treasured and valued, as that child is the most important thing in somebody’s world.”
Beyond the classroom, Charlotte keeps an active lifestyle, running every morning with her dog, Samson, and playing pickleball three times a week. She has completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage walk across Spain twice (800 km each) and has also embarked on a 1,600 km pilgrimage across France and Spain. She finds joy in the connections and fascinating people met along the way.
In her downtime, Charlotte enjoys cooking, reading, solving cryptic crosswords, and is dedicated to the Elevate brain-training app, with an impressive year-long streak.
