Educational Psychologist and Counsellor
Amelia Volkerling has been with Marsden since January 2022, working three days a week as one of our two school counsellors. Known for her genuine warmth, Amelia is deeply committed to supporting students’ academic, emotional and behavioural wellbeing. Her approachable nature and passion for creating safe spaces help students feel heard, valued, and empowered.
Amelia’s path to becoming an educational psychologist was far from linear. Initially, she thought she would pursue a career as an art historian, with a deep love for art history and photography—the subjects that truly lit her up during her school years at Marsden. "I love how the arts make you think about things from multiple perspectives, through different lenses, and how doing so deepens your understanding," she explains. This way of thinking planted the seeds for her fascination with people and their unique learning journeys. She spent time tutoring school-aged children, particularly those struggling with numeracy and literacy, and it was through this experience that she discovered her love for teaching and intervention.
This passion inspired Amelia to move into education, where she earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Professional Development. Her desire to better understand how children learn and how to support those with learning challenges led her to pursue a Masters in Educational Psychology, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Psychology Practice. By 2020, she was a registered educational psychologist, fully qualified to make a difference in the lives of students.
Balancing her career ambitions with being a mother, Amelia faced the challenge of finding a part-time internship placement that would allow her to care for her then 3-year-old son. Despite the odds, Amelia persisted, spending a year searching for a suitable placement. She eventually found one herself with How I Learn, a company specialising in cognitive and academic assessments. Through this experience, she gained invaluable insights into helping students navigate their learning challenges.
Outside of Marsden
In addition to her role at Marsden, Amelia runs her own small assessment company, Te Wheke, and consults for education providers on structured literacy and inclusive teaching practices. She also supervises tutoring companies, helping to develop training programmes and resources for staff.
As a Marsden alumna, Amelia’s experience as both a student and now a counsellor gives her a unique perspective on supporting Marsden students in their own journeys.
Outside of her professional life, Amelia is in the middle of a major home renovation with her partner. The project has involved everything from replacing piles to restoring borer-damaged woodwork, and despite the challenges, it’s been a rewarding journey. She’s excited to see their home come together, making it a welcoming space for their children.
Amelia’s vibrant personality, resilience, and passion for student wellbeing make her an invaluable member of the Marsden community. She is excited to continue guiding students through their challenges and helping them reach their full potential.
