Primary and Preschool students took part in a mock referendum on the future of the New Zealand flag with Kids Voting an educational initiative by the Electoral Commission. Aimed to encourage students to have a say on the decisions that affect their lives and to get them thinking about the democratic process. And the outcome was extremely close ... 36 for the new flag and 39 for the existing flag!
The nationwide second binding referendum is a postal vote which starts on 3 March and runs to 24 March. It will be interesting to see whether our students' vote is a forecast for the national result.
