Gemma New – Conductor
Marsden Graduate 2004
Gemma started violin and piano studies at Marsden Primary and began conducting at age 15. She was student Head of Music in 2004 and went on to gain a BMus(Hons) at the University of Canterbury and New Zealand School of Music. She later earned a graduate degree in music from Baltimore, Maryland's Peabody Institute.
Sought after for her insightful interpretations and dynamic presence, Gemma is a leader among the new generation of conductors. She is currently Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Hailed as “a rising star in the musical firmament” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), Gemma was awarded Solti Foundation Career Assistance Awards in 2017 and 2019.
Gemma returns periodically to New Zealand as a guest conductor with the NZSO and also makes time to visit and inspire a new generation of Marsden music students.
